Understanding the market
Gold spot is a market reference for gold. It is commonly quoted internationally in US dollars per fine troy ounce. The rand–dollar exchange rate also matters when expressing that reference in South African rand.
The local figure reflects both changes in the global gold price and movements in the rand–dollar exchange rate. If the dollar gold price stays unchanged but the rand weakens, the rand value of an ounce of gold can rise.
“You pay” is the amount for buying a coin from GoldGuard. “We pay you” is the amount for selling that coin to us. Gold spot is the metal reference; the price for a finished Krugerrand is different. Check the denomination and the direction of your transaction before comparing figures.
A fine troy ounce is approximately 31.1035 grams of pure gold. A one-ounce Krugerrand contains that amount, although the complete 22-carat coin weighs about 33.93 grams because copper is part of its alloy.
